Reading Story: Students take home their reading books and read the story of the week on Wednesdays. They also get to talk about the story with you using the comprehension sheet that will also be sent home. You do not need to return the comprehension sheet. It is to aid your discussion with your child. On Thursdays students will complete a short vocabulary review paper. This is considered homework and will be due the next day (Friday).
Book-It! Program: Book-It! monthly logs are due every Monday for progress checks. Please document the number of minutes your child read and write your initials on the day your child read. You child can read in whatever way words best for your familiy's schedule. Students must read for 100 minutes per week in order to receive full credit and a coupon for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut. 100 minutes a week can look different depending on your family's schedule. You child could read 20 minutes 5x per week. Or perhaps they prefer to read on the weekends and read 40 min. on Saturday and 40 min. on Sunday. Then they only need to read 20 more minutes during the school week. Students can read during sibling sporting events, or in the car. Reading before bed is also a great way to end the day. Work smart! Remember, your child can count their reading story of the week as a part of their Wednesday reading minutes. They can also use RAZ Kids at home which can also be used for reading minutes. Reading 100 minutes a week is considered part of reading homework.
If a Book-It paper is misplaced during the month, you can simply write the minutes for the week a separate sheet of paper. Turning in logs each week also means that I can help keep track of your child's reading progress in case a reading log becomes lost.
Spelling: Spelling tests are given on 5 day weeks and during some 4 day week. (Keep updated with Class Dojo for weekly announcements!) A spelling pre-test is given on Mondays to all students. If a child receives a check mark on top, it means they need to keep practicing the list and will take a second test on Friday with the same spelling words. If your child receives a star on top, then they have already mastered the weeks spelling words. They will then receive an enriched list to practice during the week and will take a spelling test using the enriched list on Friday. (*Enriched lists may not be given during the first few weeks of school.) There is not set spelling homework that needs to be turned in. We practice the spelling patterns together during the week. Families are able to practice in which ever way works best for their child and their schedule.
Your child's homework should come home with a check mark on the top of his or her paper. This check mark shows that I have seen their homework paper. If a homework paper comes home without a check mark, there is a chance that your child may not have turned it in. Please send it back in for review.
If your child turns in a homework paper late, please write "LATE" on top of it so that it can be properly documented.
If your child is absent, please write "ABSENT" on the top of it so that it can be properly documented.
*Both the reading vocabulary sheet and Book-It! log counts towards homework completion.
